An honest guide from someone who has tried several of them!
Let’s be honest:
Choosing a Stocks & Shares ISA can feel… a lot.
There are dozens of platforms, each with different fees, tools, apps, investments, and shiny promises. For many people, just opening an ISA feels like stepping into a world full of acronyms and decisions you really don’t want to get wrong.
And then there’s the idea of switching providers — which, if you’re anything like me, feels weirdly similar to switching energy suppliers.
Not difficult, just…
- a bit dull,
- involves more small print than anyone deserves,
- and carries that tiny voice in your head saying, “Don’t mess this up.”
Most people stick with the first platform they ever opened because the whole thing feels confusing and slightly admin-heavy. And I get it. I’ve moved ISAs more times than I’d like to admit, and even now, I still get that moment of hesitation before hitting “transfer”.
But here’s the good news:
Choosing the right ISA platform doesn’t need to be complicated.
So what are the best stocks & shares ISA Platforms in the UK?
After trying pretty much all the major platforms over the years — some I loved, some I tolerated, and one or two I immediately closed — here are the five that genuinely stand out (and I have experience with), each winning in their own category.
🥇 Best for Beginners — Trading 212
“If you want to start investing without feeling like you’re being dropped onto the trading floor at the LSE.”
When someone new to investing asks me where to begin, I always think the same thing:
You need something simple, intuitive, and not covered in charts that look like a NASA dashboard.
That’s Trading 212.
The app is clean, modern and makes investing feel far more approachable than the old-school platforms. Fractional shares are brilliant for beginners — “£10 of Apple please” — and the zero-commission model helps too.
Why beginners love it:
- Zero commission
- Smooth, beginner-friendly app
- People who like to trade
- Fractional shares
- Very low minimum to get started
- Doesn’t feel intimidating
- Has a community feel, can see other user’s ‘Pie’ (their portfolios)
Downsides?
- Fund range isn’t as broad as the big established platforms
- Customer service response times can vary
- No full SIPP offering
Dave’s verdict:
If I were opening my very first ISA today, I’d probably start here. I use this platform (as you will see from my Instagram page).
💸 Best Low-Cost Platform — AJ Bell
“Because fees matter. They compound too — but in the wrong direction.”
Once you get past the beginner stage, you suddenly start noticing fees.
0.25%, 0.45%, £10 dealing charges… it all begins to matter. And sooner than you think.
That’s why AJ Bell is such a standout.
I’ve used AJ Bell for years — both for investing and my SIPP — and it’s consistently been a solid, reliable, great-value platform.
The website and app are clear and packed with information. If I’m being honest, sometimes they feel a little hectic simply because there’s so much data in front of you. It’s not the most beautifully designed experience, but everything you need is there, clearly explained and easy to navigate once you get used to it.
Customer service has always been excellent. They have a proper phone line, and the people I’ve spoken with actually know what they’re talking about — which is more than I can say for certain other platforms.
Why it’s great:
- Very competitive fees
- Huge range of funds and shares
- Tons of information
- Reliable for both ISAs and SIPPs
- Full service offering
- Strong customer service
Downsides?
- The design won’t win awards
- Can feel slightly overwhelming with info at first glance
Dave’s verdict:
A rock-solid, low-cost choice. It’s the platform my wife trusts for long-term investing.
🎯 Best Overall Experience — Moneybox
“Simple, friendly, modern — investing made less scary.”
If Trading 212 is the flashy beginner-friendly choice, Moneybox is the calm, smooth, beautifully simple one.
Moneybox does a brilliant job of making investing feel accessible. The app is clean, colourful, and easy to navigate. You can choose from ready-made portfolios or pick your own funds, and the whole experience feels intentionally designed to keep things stress-free.
It’s not trying to be the most sophisticated or powerful platform. It’s trying to be the one that makes investing feel normal. And it succeeds.
Why it wins on experience:
- Very user-friendly app
- Great onboarding
- Simple investment options
- A nice balance of guidance + flexibility
- Modern, approachable, and unintimidating
Downsides?
- Pricing isn’t the cheapest
- Not ideal for investors wanting complex fund screens or deep research tools
Dave’s verdict:
If you want an ISA that feels easy, friendly and well-designed, Moneybox is a joy to use.
💼 Best for Large Portfolios (£50k+) — Interactive Investor (ii)
“The bigger your ISA gets, the more percentage-based fees hurt.”
Here’s the part many investors don’t realise early on:
At £10k, a 0.25% fee is annoying.
At £100k, it becomes expensive.
At £250k, it becomes infuriating.
If you’ve built a sizeable ISA pot, Interactive Investor often works out far cheaper thanks to its flat monthly fee model.
You pay the same whether your ISA is £10k, £100k or £1m — which can save you hundreds (even thousands) over the years.
Why it’s great for big portfolios:
- Flat fees = huge potential savings
- Strong, reputable platform
- Good fund and share range
- Ideal for long-term, larger accounts
Downsides?
- Not as cost-effective for beginners
- The app isn’t as slick as Trading 212 or Moneybox
Dave’s verdict:
If your ISA or SIPP is above ~£50k, ii becomes a no brainer as their flat fee model wins all the time. I use this for my SIPP and whilst the app or website is not the best, I like the low fees and their customer service is good (someone at the end of the phone in Manchester).
🤝 Best Managed Option — Moneyfarm
“For people who want to invest… but don’t want to do the investing.”
Not everyone wants to pick funds, read market reports or decide whether emerging markets are “due a good year”.
Some people just want to invest without thinking about it.
That’s Moneyfarm.
It’s a fully managed service. You choose your risk level, they build and manage your portfolio. The app is clean and the explanations are simple — perfect for anyone who wants investing on autopilot.
Why Moneyfarm wins:
- Hands-off investing
- Clear risk profiles
- Good long-term structure
- Modern app and dashboard
Downsides?
- Higher fees than DIY platforms
- You still carry investment risk (naturally)
Dave’s verdict:
A great choice if you want investing done for you without the faff.
What Would I Choose?
A few quick questions make the decision much simpler and it really does depend on what I have, what I want to achieve and what is important to me:
1️⃣ Am I a beginner?
→ Trading 212 or Moneybox
2️⃣ Is keeping costs low a priority?
→ Trading 212 or AJ Bell
3️⃣ Do I value a friendly, well-designed investing experience?
→ Moneybox
4️⃣ Is my portfolio over £50k?
→ Interactive Investor
5️⃣ Do I want it all managed for me?
→ Moneyfarm

It’s simply a selection of platforms I’ve personally used over the years, with honest reflections based on real experience. Some I still use today. Others I’ve moved on from. All of them taught me something about what actually matters when investing.
